What a great idea. Who knew? The path to twitter keeps getting simpler and simpler. I need to finally break down and tweet. Peer pressure is good pressure when coming from good peers!

If you are good at html and css, MODx is perfect for you.
It allows a great deal of flexibility.
You can within hours graft a html/css or wordpress design on to MODx.

FYI. The browser issue is not with FireFox in general... but very specifically with FireFox 3.5 on Linux, it's a broswercaps issue actually... I'll see if I can get one of our engineers to comment further.

Cheers

Murphy's Law reigns. The day of your attempt we went through an IP conversion in our infrastructure which resulted in the mail server being (very) temporarily unreachable. It was resolved within minutes of being identified. And our downloads page was also updated that day, the Installation instructions are no longer behind a form. Hope you'll give us another try!

I, too, had my first experience with MODx yesterday. I was asked by a client to make some changes to a site whose original designer is now long gone. While I stumbled through the interface for awhile, I did finally figure out how to make the changes they wanted. The mention of chunks and snippets is a bit intimidating, however.

Since my services are more on managing the content vs creating sites, now I have to decide whether or not they should keep their site and find someone who can create new templates and add more functionality to their site with MODx, or just recommend they do a complete re-write.

That said, your post was very helpful!

Josh,

I think you gave up to easily. The site renders fine in Firefox 3.5.3 for me.

The software can be downloaded from Codeplex.com directly, see http://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/

Prerequisites are: MS SQL database (2005 preferred, but 2000 will work for now. It does work with the free version, SQL Express) and MS IIS 6 or 7, with the .NET Framework 2.0

Give it another look, I thing you'll be surprised. The user and role managment and permissions are much easier to use compared to Drupal.

I agree with the fact that DNN's public site should be much more stable, defintely something they should pay more attention to.

Interesting enough, I checked the public site with FF3.5 and couldnt repro. the issue. Where you just hitting the main page itself?

I wonder if you stumbled on it at a bad time, during a maintenance window.

Good luck with your reviews.

The answer to why I didn't just download the site from Codeplex is that I didn't know how to do that. I was approaching DotNetNuke as a total newbie, interested in trying it out. My experience with the website was extremely off-putting, in just about every regard. This is not welcoming for newbies.

When you adopt an open source product, you are also becoming part of community. There shouldn't be crazy barriers to entry like a broken website. And the website was broken. The FF3.5 problems were not my only concern. As I noted, the SMTP server was also not configured properly.

That said, I am still interested in checking out the software, so I will try to download it from Codeplex. Right now, though, it has been moved to the bottom of my list.
